Huntington Learning Center Shares Simple Ways Parents Can Contribute to The Betterment of their Child’s School Every parent knows that teachers and staff are part of what makes a school great, but parents have a lot to do with a schools success as well. There are objective measures of schools performance such as test scores and teacher-student ratio, but there are a number of other intangible factors as well, says Eileen Huntington, co-founder of Huntington Learning Center. A positive school culture that fosters student success truly does take a village, and parents are key members of that village. What can parents do to contribute to a great school environment? Huntington suggests these simple tips: Be supportive. Without parental support, teachers cannot do their jobs to the best of their ability. Reach out to your childs teacher early in the school year to establish a positive working relationship. Communicate often and make it clear that you want to help your child succeed in school and do your part at home. Ask how you can support the teachers efforts in the classroom and follow through on fulfilling those requests. Collaborate. The best schools are those where parents and teachers maintain collaborative partnerships for the benefit of the students. So, seek suggestions from the teacher on how to support your students learning. If your child is struggling, dont just assume that the teacher will handle it. Solicit suggestions of things you can do at home to help, such as enrolling your child in a tutoring program. When it comes to homework, ask about the best ways you can relate assignments to real-world learning. Uphold high expectations for your child. Research shows that upholding high expectations for students results in increased confidence and motivation, improved learning and more. Communicate with your childs teacher about the most appropriate learning tasks that will spark your childs interests and foster his or her success. When you and the teacher are on the same page about your childs capabilities and potential, together, you can offer him or her consistent support. Get involved. Involved parents make a great school. Volunteer in the classroom if you can, but if your schedule prevents this, there are many alternatives. Attend school events. Go to Parent-Teacher Organization meetings to learn more about your school and how you can help make it the best possible environment for students. Also, one of the simplest ways to get involved is to show your child that you value his or her education. Establish a good relationship with teachers and school staff and talk to your child about his or her school day, interests, homework and projects. Schools should offer children a well-rounded education and help them become capable, independent citizens, but parents play an essential role in schools efforts, says Huntington. Parental support at home and at school will have a direct and indirect positive impact on your child. Get involved, communicate with teachers and show your child through your actions that you want to support their school however you can.

Unfortunately, most colleges dont offer a course in how to get a job. However, there are a few things that new grads can think about before they go in for interviews. 1. Dont apply to every job you see on the internet Applying for one or two jobs can be exhausting. There are countless forms to fill out, customized cover letters to write, and in-person interviews to prepare for. So, how long will that energy last if youre applying for 20 jobs in one week? Its a good idea to pace yourself even if you really want that new job ASAP. Pick two or three jobs a week to really invest your time in and give it your all. Do your research Although there are a few professionals who simply dont want their contact information to be found, most people’s information can be located somewhere on the internet if perhaps not on the company’s website. Think of the research as studying and the interview as the final exam. 3. The cover letter One thing many new grads dont do is write an individualized cover letter for each job. Its tempting to think that a job application is like the Common Application, one and done. However, applicants who dont take the time to write a separate cover letter from scratch generally dont get hired. Apply for a job you actually want Although this seems obvious, many people apply for tons of jobs they have absolutely no interest in. Of course at some point people have to work just to make money, but its a good idea to start out with an idealist point of view. Start by giving your enthusiasm to a field or company you feel passionate about. The hiring manager will definitely be able to tell if you love the job or if you are trudging through it and dont really want to be there. 5. Connecting and contacts Although there are many avenues in which to get hired, making connections still proves to be one of the best ways to get a foot in the door. Make as many relevant contacts as you can but make sure your interactions are genuine. People wont want to help you out if they feel you are only in it for yourself. Be honest about your intentions (they will know you are looking for a job after all) but make sure your personality shines through during any communications or businesses meetings. 6. Patience is paramount Although our current economy is making it easier for new grads to find a job, it doesn’t mean that they will find a career in their field straight away. It also doesn’t help that family and peers will be consistently comparing your job search to others but remember that good things come to those who wait (and work hard). Parents and students have a natural tendency to assume that online tuition can hardly match face to face tuition. Our experience reveals that much depends on what subject is being taught, the age of the student and if the student has good organisational skills and self discipline. Below are a few pros and cons that we at First Tutors think are important points to consider before deciding if online tuition is the most suitable option. Pros Online tuition can be the perfect solution for older students who are comfortable with computer technology and virtual environments. Online tuition is convenient, it can save time, travel expenses and in some instances can be slightly cheaper than face to face tuition. Online tuition has been working successfully since 1998 with The Open University. Computer software permits users to record, save and access information at a later date. The whole lesson could even be recorded and kept on file. Students using digital pens can allow the tutor to see what is being written in real time. Parents feel calm knowing their child is safe at home, they can even monitor the quality of online lessons. Cons Online tuition can't substitute human interaction and observance of facial expressions in the same way as face to face tuition. Some complex subjects are more difficult to explain online. When teaching a young child how to multiply, subtract or similar, the tutor can't physically show the child with actions what they are trying to explain. Students will need to acquire new technical skills to handle frozen computer screens or server downtime - this can cause added frustration. If the student becomes frustrated or upset over a certain task, it's not easy for the tutor to console the student without being physically present. (again lack of personal interaction) Online tuition is on the increase but First Tutors have noticed that the majority of requests for online tuition come from older students - from the age of 16 and upwards. This does not mean that younger children cannot successfully engage with a private online tutor but we do think that parental assistance and guidance could be necessary to help the child overcome any possible technical issues. If you and your child are tech-savvy then why not try it out!
